You can enjoy growing house plants even with limited space, like in a small apartment or an office cubicle. Plenty of indoor plants don’t need a lot of room to grow because they will stay small and compact even when they mature.
Many indoor succulents and cactus plants will stay small, but there are also some foliage plants that won’t grow very tall. Here are 30 of my favorite small plants that I’m sure you will love as well!

1. Air Plants – Tillandsia
Tillandsia ionantha air plants are small and unique houseplants with long, slender leaves that form a bushy rosette, resembling mini pineapple tops. These fascinating plants come in various colors and sizes, with foliage that can be silvery grey or green, and may blush red or pink when in bloom. They don’t need any soil, are easy to care for, and can be displayed in many creative ways.

2. African Violet – Saintpaulia
The African violet is a delightful small houseplant known for its vibrant, velvety leaves and an array of colorful flowers ranging from purple to pink. Thriving in bright, indirect light, it’s perfect for a sunny windowsill and can bloom almost year-round with proper care. Bonus that it is non toxic, so safe to grow around your pets!

3. Astrophytum cactus plants
The Astrophytum myriostigma, or Bishop’s Cap, is an unusual-looking cactus that is easy to grow as an indoor plant. Its appearance can range from smooth green to a chalk-white or silver-grey look due to tiny white hairs. The most important thing is to provide plenty of light and very little water. The Astrophytum asterias, or star cactus, is a fun relative.

4. Bear paw succulent – Cotyledon tomentosa
The bear paw succulent, scientifically known as Cotyledon tomentosa, is a charming small houseplant with plump, fuzzy green leaves that resemble the paws of a bear. This succulent thrives in bright light, ideally near a sunny window, and requires minimal watering. When grown in plenty of light, the leaves often have reddish tips, adding a touch of color and whimsy to their appearance.

5. Buddha’s temple – Crassula pyramidalis
The Buddha’s Temple plant, also known as Crassula pyramidalis, is a unique, somewhat rare succulent with tightly stacked, square-shaped leaf rosettes that resemble a temple or pagoda. This eye-catching plant stays compact and requires minimal care, thriving in bright, indirect sunlight and well-draining soil. Its architectural form and intriguing appearance make it a standout addition to any houseplant collection.

6. Callisia Repens Pink Lady Plant
The Callisia repens ‘Pink Lady,’ also known as the Turtle Vine, is a delightful tropical houseplant characterized by its tiny, ovate leaves with charming pink and green variegation. The dense, trailing foliage thrives in bright, indirect light. Provide consistent moisture and high humidity to maintain its vibrant appearance.

7. Coral cactus – Euphorbia lactea cristata
The Coral cactus is a hybrid of two distinct succulent species grown on top of each other, resulting in its distinct coral-like appearance. This slow-growing succulent thrives in well-draining soil, requires moderate watering, and prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its health and eye-catching look.

8.Crassula marnieriana
The Crassula marnieriana, commonly known as the Jade Necklace or Worm plant, is a fun-looking succulent. This small plant thrives in bright, indirect light and requires well-draining soil to prevent root rot. With its unique stacked growth pattern and easy-care nature, it is perfect to grow as a hanging plant or on a plant shelf in your home.

9. Cyclamen
The Cyclamen plant grows long-lasting vibrant flowers and heart-shaped leaves. It thrives in cooler indoor environments with bright, indirect light. Its delicate blooms come in shades of pink, red, or white. Cyclamen requires careful watering to keep its soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.

10. Echeveria
The Echeveria plant is one of the most popular indoor succulents. They don’t need high humidity and their thick succulent leaves store water inside, making them very easy to care for and great for beginners. Love pink plants? Go for the lovely variegated Echeveria rainbow!

11. Fairy castle cactus
The Fairy Castle Cactus, scientifically known as Acanthocereus tetragonus, is a charming small houseplant characterized by its unique, clustered vertical stems that resemble a castle turret. This cactus thrives in bright, indirect light and requires minimal watering, making it ideal for beginners in cactus care.

12. Frithia pulchra – Fairy Elephant’s Feet
Frithia pulchra, also known as the Fairy Elephant’s Feet, is a compact succulent with a unique appearance. Its thick, triangular leaves feature translucent windows at the top that allow light to enter. This petite plant thrives in bright, indirect light and requires infrequent watering to thrive in a well-draining soil mix.

13. Gasteria little warty
Gasteria Little Warty is a charming small houseplant sometimes called cow or ox tongue for the thick textured tongue-shaped leaves. Its compact size makes it perfect for tabletops or shelves. It is very easy to care for, tolerates some neglect, and can handle low-light conditions indoors.

The thick, fuzzy foliage gives it a unique texture and appearance, making it a standout succulent. With proper care, including bright indirect light and well-draining soil, the Panda Plant can grow well indoors

17. Nerve Plant – Fittonia
The nerve plant, scientifically known as Fittonia, is a charming low-growing houseplant with vibrant, intricate lace-like patterns on its leaves. They come in many different colors, from green to pink and red. Word of warning that indoor fittonia plants can be a little fussy. They like moist soil but don’t want to be watered too often or with cold water. They don’t like direct sunlight but do need high humidity all the time. They can wilt like a diva, but perk up quickly after watering.

18. Peperomia Caperata
Peperomia caperata is a charming houseplant celebrated for its textured leaves and compact growth habit. With its heart-shaped foliage in shades of green, red, or purple, it adds a subtle yet captivating beauty to indoor spaces. 19. Peperomia Graveolens
The Peperomia graveolens, also known as Ruby Glow or Ruby Peperomia, is a small, fun-looking succulent. The red and green v-shaped leaves store water inside, making them drought-tolerant and very easy to care for. This low-maintenance plant thrives in bright, indirect light and adds a unique, colorful accent to any small indoor space or plant collection.

20. Pickle Plant – Delosperma Echinatum
The Pickle Plant, officially known as Delosperma echinatum, is a whimsical succulent with leaves that look like little pickles! They are covered with small white hairs that make it look like a cactus, but unlike a cactus, these don’t prick but are soft to the touch.

21. Pilea Glauca
Pilea glauca is a delightful small houseplant characterized by its tiny, round leaves in a silvery-green hue. This compact plant can be grown as a houseplant, and although fairly easy to grow, it does need some care and attention. These are not plants that thrive on neglect. A closed terrarium is a great option since it loves the high humidity.

22. Polka Dot Plant – Hypoestes phyllostachya
The Hypoestes plant, commonly known as the Polka Dot plant, grows beautiful variegated leaves, splashed with white, pink, red, or burgundy red spots, dots, and splashes. This small plant brightens up your windowsill! The different varieties are often sold together as a mix, sometimes even mixed in a single pot.

23. Rose of Jericho
The Rose of Jericho plant, also known as the Resurrection plant, is a unique and resilient houseplant. When dried, its curled-up appearance resembles a tumbleweed, but once watered, it miraculously unfurls into a lush green plant in 24 hours. This fascinating plant can survive long periods without water and needs the least care of all house plants. Just let it dry again after about a week.

24. Sansevieria Francisii
Sansevieria francisii, a relative of the classic Snake plant, is an easy-care succulent plant that can grow in low light, needs very little water, and does not have many care problems. It grows cylindrical, spiky leaves in a rosette pattern and is a great beginner plant.

25. Senecio barbertonicus
Senecio barbertonicus is a fun-looking evergreen succulent, that grows thin, cylindrical leaves. They grow upwards along the branches, clustering like a starburst at the ends. They stay small and are easy to care for. This makes them perfect to put on shelves and in small spaces, like offices, dorm rooms, and sunny window sills.

26. Starfish Sansevieria Cylindrica
The Starfish Sansevieria Cylindrica, scientifically known as Sansevieria cylindrica ‘Boncel,’ is a compact succulent with cylindrical, fleshy leaves radiating from a central point, resembling the arms of a starfish. It can survive indoors in low light, needs very little water, and does not have many care problems, making it a great small houseplant.

27. String of Turtles – Peperomia prostrata
The String of Turtles plant, scientifically named Peperomia prostrata, is a charming semi-succulent plant with long trailing stems. Along the delicate stems grow pairs of small, round leaves that look like little turtle shells.

28. Tillandsia cyanea
The Tillandsia cyanea, commonly named Pink Quill, is a lovely bromeliad plant. It grows long, slender grassy leaves arching in a bushy rosette pattern. A compact pink bract with violet-purple flowers grows from the center at bloom time. This small plant will surely add a burst of color and texture to your space.

29. Venus Fly Trap
The Venus Flytrap is a fascinating small carnivorous plant, with traps that snap shut on insects. It requires a sunny spot and distilled water to thrive, as tap water can harm its delicate roots. With proper care, including occasional feeding and a humid environment, it can be a unique and entertaining addition to your indoor plant collection.

30. Watermelon Peperomia – Peperomia Argyreia
The Watermelon Peperomia is a popular little houseplant known for its distinctive round leaves adorned with silver stripes, resembling little watermelons. It stays small even as it matures, and is easy to care for.
