Cacti are a specific group of succulents that belong to the Cactaceae family and have distinct features such as areolas and spines. Succulents, on the other hand, encompass a wide range of plant families and exhibit a variety of growth forms. While they share the ability to store water, these differences make each group unique and fascinating in its own right.

Are Cactus Succulents?

While all cactus plants are succulents, not all succulents are cacti.

Succulents are plants that have adapted to arid and semi-arid environments by developing the ability to store water in their leaves, stems, or roots. Cacti are a specialized group of succulents.

1. Presence of Areolas

One of the most distinguishing features of cacti is the presence of areolas. Areolas are small, round, cushion-like structures from which spines, flowers, and new growth emerge. Succulents, on the other hand, don’t have these specialized structures.

2. Spines

Cactus plants typically have spines, which are modified leaves or small, needle-like structures that serve various functions. Some succulents may have thorns, but these are not the same as cactus spines. Thorns on succulents are usually tougher and less flexible than cactus spines.

3. Flowers

While both cacti and succulents can produce beautiful, often colorful flowers, cactus flowers are usually more conspicuous and showy. Succulent flowers tend to be smaller and less showy in comparison.

4. Family Differences

Cacti belong to the family Cactaceae, which is a distinct botanical family. Succulents, on the other hand, encompass a wide range of plant families, including but not limited to Crassulaceae, Aizoaceae, and Euphorbiaceae.

5. Growth Habit

Cacti often have a more distinct and upright growth habit, with clear stem-like structures, and their growth points are the areolas. Succulents come in various growth forms, including rosettes, sprawling stems, and ground covers.

6. Geographic Distribution

Cacti are primarily native to the Americas, especially the deserts of North and South America. Succulents, on the other hand, can be found on almost every continent and in a broader range of habitats, including deserts, savannas, and even some rainforests.
